Pleasure Time On the Waterway

On the Waterway

Starry, Starry, Starfish

Starry, Starry, Starfish

Written by Diane E. Robertson

Whether you live here year-round or seasonally, chances are you occasionally enjoy walking on one of our beautiful beaches. As the tide rushes in, lovely shells and ocean inhabitants are washed ashore. If you’re especially fortunate, you may come across a sea star, more commonly known as a starfish, which are one of the ocean’s most popular and remarkable creatures.

Wisps of Wonder

Written by Sam Schunk

Looking closer at the plumage of birds, such as the peacock’s feather that is showcased on this month’s cover, a kaleidoscopic tableau of textures, swirls and patterns emerges. Every shade in the color spectrum is represented, from canary yellow, golden orange and radiant red, to verdant greens, sapphire blues, incredible indigos, and rich violets. These vibrant hues are masterfully blended together, creating a natural tapestry that captivates the eye. Like artists blending paints on a palette, these fabulously feathered birds from regions all around the world were brought together for this feature, yet each of these birds is enchanting in its own right, with unique traits that make it a winged wonder.

Birds of Paradise

On the water, a sea of white feathered, long-legged birds with graceful, S-curved necks creates a beautiful picture, one that from a distance seems like snowflakes speckling the shimmering surface. Upon looking closer, the egrets’ distinctive yellow bill, black legs and black feet add an additional splash of color to the serene image. Great Egrets are very similar in appearance to Snowy Egrets, which can be distinguished from Great Egrets by their bright yellow feet and slightly smaller size.

What could be more exciting than discovering a family of Sandhill Cranes leisurely strolling across your backyard, a flock of Spoonbills wading in the warm Gulf waters, or a rare sighting of an African Crowned Crane with his striking plumage and rouged cheeks?

Our slice of paradise offers an unparalleled opportunity to observe these uniquely beautiful creatures in their natural habitat.

The Grande Dame of Eco-Tourism

Growing up in Boca Grande before the causeway existed, Marian Schneider mastered the navigational skills to ferry herself back and forth to school in her own wooden boat. A deep love of the water was fostered by her father who outfitted young Marian with a skiff and a fishing pole before a bicycle. It’s no wonder that today this Florida native holds a Master Captain’s License certified by the United States Coast Guard, is the first lady member of the Boca Grande Fishing Guides Association; and, since 1989, has operated the oldest kayak and touring center in Charlotte County.

Three Good Reasons to Take Up Fishing

Three Good Reasons to Take Up FishingTo the non-angler, fishing can seem like a strange sport. It involves lots of waiting, possibly for hours. After all that time, you may not even be rewarded for your patience, and go home empty-handed. So why on earth would anyone be tempted to go fishing?

It’s not necessarily about how many fish you catch. Every angler has his own theory as to why the sport is so popular, but it’s likely their theories will include some of the following aspects:

1. A Sport for All Seasons
You can fish in any weather. How well prepared you are for the weather can make or break your fishing trip. In the summer, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the water is teeming with wildlife. It’s a great time to fish as long as you have the right gear in tow.
