Use Biodegradable Tableware
The easiest way to move toward going green with
your picnic is to avoid disposable eating utensils
and tableware made from plastic or Styrofoam.
Recycled or biodegradable paper dinnerware is one
solution, or perhaps you might want to use
unbreakable dinnerware for your outdoor meals. You
can take along regular flatware or look for some
biodegradable corn, sugar cane, or bamboo
utensils.
Beverage Containers
You might want to consider getting a set of Tervis®
Tumblers for your next barbeque or picnic. These
insulated, unbreakable tumblers are made to last a
lifetime and keep hot beverages hot and cold
drinks cold. Another fun choice might be to take
along a Thermos® or canteen. If you
choose to take soft drinks with you, take cans
rather than bottles because aluminum is more
easily and usefully recycled. If you do take a
bottle of your favorite beverage, either recycle
it or find a way to reuse it.
Packing It Up
You will need a way to transport the contents of
your picnic. Reusable insulated coolers, cloth
carry-all bags, or large wicker baskets are good
choices depending upon your party theme. For
example, if you want to create an old-fashioned
picnic, use a vintage basket. Don’t forget to take
along picnic table linens.
Organic Food
To create a really “green” meal, consider buying
fresh, organic goods. Locally grown food, whether
organic or not, helps the environment, since it
takes less fuel to transport the products to the
market. Try to pack food such as finger
sandwiches, fruit, and salad greens. Think about
including some whole produce such as apples,
grapes, tomatoes, watermelons and other similar
treats that do not require additional packaging to
stay fresh. Remember, think reuse and recycle as
you pack up your meal. To do this, use recyclable
foil or reusable plastic containers instead of the
disposable alternatives.

Cooking Out
If you are planning to cook out, try using an
electric or gas grill. If you choose charcoal,
apply petroleum-free starter fluid or use a
chimney starter to avoid the smelly smoke.
Ethanol-based fluid is 99 percent petroleum-free,
odorless, and it burns hotter than standard
fluids.
Tidy Up
Clean up with washable cloths, or use unbleached,
100-percent recycled paper towels. Always throw
your refuse away, or take it with you if
appropriate waste containers aren’t available.
Whether you are looking to fill a few hours on a
summer afternoon or planning an all-day outdoor
adventure, a green picnic is environmentally
friendly. Since you’re out enjoying nature, you
can feel good about helping to protect it!
