Planning a Green Picnic

One of many wonderful things about living in paradise is the vast number of places available to enjoy outdoor eating adventures including picnics and barbeques. Whether you choose to gather in your own back yard or lanai, at the beach or in an area park, you can make your outdoor event not only fun but also eco-friendly.

Use Biodegradable Tableware

The easiest way to move toward going green with your picnic is to avoid disposable eating utensils and tableware made from plastic or Styrofoam. Recycled or biodegradable paper dinnerware is one solution, or perhaps you might want to use unbreakable dinnerware for your outdoor meals. You can take along regular flatware or look for some biodegradable corn, sugar cane, or bamboo utensils.

Even when household appliances aren’t switched on, appliances that are plugged in use energy. Experts estimate that as much as 40 percent of all electricity is used to power home appliances that are turned off. Imagine the benefits of simply unplugging the gadgets you aren’t using!

Why not make it green!

Everywhere you look, it seems you see something urging us to go green. Not since the 1960s has there been this kind of emphasis on the environment and then, most of mainstream America attributed the concern to environmentalists. Many of us remember the campaign to stop Americans from littering that featured a Native American canoeing in a heavily polluted river as a tear ran down his cheek. And, remember the jingle, “Please, please don’t be a litterbug, ‘cause every litter bit hurts?”
